Just to get you going in case you have not gotten
this far, here is my modem configuration. Pay close
attention to &C1, &D3, &Q5, and S95=000.
Sendmail works locally with Pine very well. The trick
to getting Pine to work without a network is to just
run netconfig and install an IP even though you do not
have one. Do not use autoloopback! Just using the
IP numbers on the menu will work. Also, do not use a
nameserver. You do not need to make any changes to
Sendmail or Pine initially. There are a lot of ways
to configure your site. I finally opted to skip on
BBS software altogether because the security features
of Linux are so good and BBS software did not offer
anything but confusion. A user login just gives a
DOS-like prompt that accepts DOS-like commands. In
fact, you can write your own shells in TCL so that
all the major DOS commands are available. You can
then decide which scripts are available to which
users.
It is very normal with FD in DOS to pass netmail
at certain hours etc. In Linux you do this with
crond. Its configuration file is crontab.
getting Linux up and running and getting it to
do anything you would do in DOS. Bare in mind that
Linux distributions now include a huge amount of
utilties which can do anything you could ever do
in DOS, plus a lot. The problem is that it may take
you a long time to find all these cool things.
Please do not hesitate to contact me. Also,
I will need to think in more detail on your other
questions. I have exams tomorrow! If I do not reply
soon, send me a reminder with a copy of your
questions.
