This may be because of broken cron: many Linus distributions had cron
compiled to *not* use setgroups() call which is a bug.

Anyway, making rnews suid news or setgid news (as INN suggests) should
fix your problems. Hmm, your distribution seems seriously broken if
you have bad cron and non-setgid rnews...
